Enhancing Awareness and Education on Food Security for Youths in Qatar: A Comparative Study
摘要
Food security remains one of the most pressing global challenges, with Qatar making significant strides in realizing its National Food Security Strategy to achieve sustainability and resilience. However, despite the nation’s strong commitment, higher education institutions in Qatar have yet to comprehensively integrate food security education into their academic curricula. This paper examines the gap in both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of food security education within Qatar’s universities and compares existing educational frameworks in countries with well-established food security curricula. Through this comparative analysis, the study highlights the absence of structured programs, courses, and research opportunities related to food security within Qatar’s higher education sector. Furthermore, the paper evaluates the current state of food security education in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, identifying various levels of implementation and challenges in fostering food security awareness. A key concern raised is the low participation of youth in food security matters, despite the growing need for their engagement in developing sustainable solutions. The study explores the age distribution and interest levels of university students in food security education, emphasizing the need to cultivate a new generation of experts equipped with knowledge and skills to contribute to Qatar’s food security goals. Based on the findings, this research proposes strategic recommendations to strengthen food security education in Qatar. These include the introduction of well-structured, relevant academic programs tailored to the country’s specific needs, the active involvement of key stakeholders—including government entities, educational institutions, and private sector players—and the promotion of youth engagement in food security initiatives. By fostering a deeper understanding of Integrated Sustainable Food Systems (ISSF) and related food security challenges, this study seeks to advance national efforts toward achieving long-term food sustainability. Strengthening food security education within Qatar’s higher education system will not only support the country’s strategic vision but also empower future generations to address critical food security challenges on both national and global scales.
