The Maghreb countries, particularly Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, are bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea and are exposed to marine intrusion. This phenomenon is driven by two factors: the adverse effects of climate change, notably the significant decrease in precipitation, which reduces water inflows into dams and aquifers, leading to an imbalance in water budgets; and the second cause stemming from the first. Indeed, the lack of precipitation is exacerbated by the overexploitation of aquifers, resulting in marine intrusion. The compilation of research conducted by scholars from these three countries, as well as to a lesser extent Libya, confirms this trend towards marine intrusion. In Morocco, researchers recently published a study in 2022 on coastal aquifers to assess the sustainability prospects of water resources in these aquifers. In Algeria, studies have focused on the aquifers of the Bay of Algiers, Annaba, Nador (Tipaza), and Bouteldja. The results indicate an almost certain marine intrusion in these aquifers. Tunisian researchers have worked on groundwater monitoring to evaluate artificial recharge in the Mediterranean coastal aquifer of Korba (northeast Tunisia). This work aims to explore the current state and provide a comprehensive review of the extent of saltwater intrusion in the region and the future challenges.
