Face Global Warming. Scenarios Proposed for the Choice of the Installation of Aquaculture Farms and Desalination Plants on the Algerian Coast

The last decade in Algeria has been marked by a decline in fishing and the drying up of dams. Firstly, we were interested in analyzing the sea surface temperature SST as a witness to global warming. We used daily data from the EU Copernicus Marine Service for surface temperature (SST) over a long period 1983–2022 with a spatial resolution of 0.05 × 0.05º. We took the decade 1983–1992 as the reference decade. The comparative study of the average temperature of the three decades 1993–2002, 2003–2012 and 2013–2022 compared to the reference decade showed the presence of significant thermal fluctuations. The analysis of SST over a long period showed us that SST increased by 0.9 °C over the four decades. To confirm the result, we analyzed SST measurements measured in situ over four years. We concluded that the average SST increased from year to year for all months. To combat water shortages and the absence of fish, the Algerian government has decided to accelerate investment in aquaculture and desalination. It is impossible for these two activities to take place in the same space. We proposed two scenarios in order to avoid conflicts between the two activities. In the case of the presence of an aquaculture farm and the installation of a desalination plant, a local study of currents is mandatory by combining high spatial resolution satellite images and current measurements. In the case of the presence of a desalination plant and we wish to install an aquaculture farm in order to avoid any conflict, we have proposed the installation of an offshore aquaculture farm. A new algorithm is proposed combining batymetry and spectral analysis of waves, resulting in a map with the presence of new stations.
