Global Warming, Agriculture and Food Security: A Review of Impact of Rising Temperature on Crop Yields and Food Security in Northeastern, Nigeria

This article reviews the impact of rising temperatures on agriculture and food security in Northern Nigeria, a region heavily reliant on agriculture due to its high population dependence on subsistence farming. Agriculture in Northern Nigeria is critical for the economy but faces significant challenges due to its hot, semi-arid climate. Climate change, characterized by increasing global temperatures, exacerbates these challenges by affecting crop yields, which in turn threatens food availability and security. Rising temperatures in this region adversely affect key crops such as maize, millet, sorghum, wheat, and rice. Studies reviewed indicate a significant negative impact of high temperatures on these crops, leading to reduced yields and increased food prices, which worsen food insecurity. Research have shown a direct correlation between higher temperatures and decreased maize, rice, millet, wheat and sorghum yields. This resulted in economic pressures on farmers and higher food prices for consumers, thereby impacting local economies and food security. To address these issues, the article emphasizes the need for comprehensive adaptation strategies. Key recommendations include the development and adoption of heat-resistant crop varieties, implementation of advanced water management technologies, and enhancement of agricultural support services to help farmers cope with temperature fluctuations. These measures are crucial for improving crop resilience and ensuring food security in the face of rising temperatures.
