The integration of large language models (LLMs) into academia has started considerable discussions regarding their benefits and challenges. This study aims to explore the growing influence of large language models (LLMs) in academia by analyzing their adoption trends and assessing the specific impact of ChatGPT. To do so, the perspectives of researchers, students, and educators are analyzed toward the usage of ChatGPT. By examining its role, benefits, and challenges, this research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of how ChatGPT is shaping academic practices. Using a purpose-sampling technique, data is collected through online surveys from 320 participants from different universities. The findings reveal that while ChatGPT offers notable advantages such as time efficiency, idea generation, and improved writing skills, concerns about accuracy, originality, and ethical implications persist. Researchers frequently use ChatGPT for streamlining research processes, yet they remain cautious about its reliability. Students leverage it for various academic tasks, but issues of academic integrity arise. Educators recognize its potential as a teaching tool but express significant concerns about misuse for cheating. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on AI integration in higher education by providing empirical evidence on the benefits and limitations of ChatGPT, emphasizing the need for clearer guidelines and ethical awareness to ensure responsible use.
