This chapter discusses the local perception of the French invasion. It focuses on how the occupation was portrayed in the accounts of two eyewitnesses: the Egyptian ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Jabarti and the Lebanese Niqula al-Turk. The chapter examines their views on the French Revolution and its slogans as introduced in Egypt, their impressions of French administrative structures and way of life, and their assessments of French military command. Although both chroniclers narrated the history of the French occupation from their own social and religious perspectives, their accounts reflect, to some extent, the broader attitudes held by various social and religious groups in Egypt.
