The chapter discusses the historiography of the French campaign in Egypt and introduces key approaches to studying the mutual perceptions of the French and Egyptians during the occupation. It addresses the problem of Orientalism, explores the connection between colonial and revolutionary violence, and examines the role of the image of the “Other” in shaping national self-consciousness. The chapter outlines the sources used in the research, including Arabic chronicles, French official and personal papers, press materials, and correspondence.
