A Glance to the Future
摘要
Since the first intraocular lenses (IOLs) were implanted, a tremendous progress has been made. During less than 80 years, cataract surgeries advanced from the traditional intracapsular cataract extraction to the modern phacoemulsification and from aphakia to multifocal intraocular lenses. This progress did not stop but rather accelerated in the last two decades and seems that there is never a dull moment in inventing and designing new intraocular lenses. The main goal of achieving multifocality—long distance, intermediate distance, and short distance perfect vision—is still a challenge to be met in the future. However, some steps toward it have already been taken, and accommodative lenses are one of the steps toward it—though still not perfectly designed.
