The Rayner Multifocal IOL Family: State-of-the-Art Technology from the Original Manufacturer of IOLs
摘要
One of the major advances in the field of ophthalmology, both in terms of how it is practiced and the benefit to patients, began with the implantation of the first successful intraocular lens (IOL) by Sir Harold Ridley on November 29, 1949. Technology, instrumentation, and techniques have advanced such that cataract surgery with intraocular lens insertion is one of the most commonly performed operations on an international scale, and the commonest in nearly all developed countries. Monofocal IOLs remain, for the most part, the first choice of IOLs for use in cataract surgery; however, due to the loss of the ability to accommodate with increasing age, near-to-intermediate visual performance is often inadequate and can leave patients dependent on spectacles for near-vision tasks, such as computer work or reading. This “absolute presbyopia” has been somewhat ironically referred to as “the commonest complication of uncomplicated cataract surgery.” Multifocal IOLs, first introduced in 1997, allow most postoperative cataract patients the advantage of spectacle-free vision and remain the most predictable way to treat presbyopia surgically. This chapter outlines the contribution of multifocal IOLs produced by Rayner Intraocular Lenses Ltd—the British manufacturer of the original successful intraocular lens—highlighting the range and practicalities of use of these lenses.
