Unlocking the Potential of Immersive Technologies in K-12 Physical Education: A Systematic Literature Review

Immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) offer innovative opportunities to enhance physical education (PE) by promoting physical, cognitive, and social growth. This systematic literature review examines their integration into K-12 PE curricula, analyzing 33 peer-reviewed studies published between 2012 and 2022, following PRISMA guidelines. The findings highlight that immersive technologies significantly improve motor skills, cognitive abilities, and social interaction while increasing student engagement, motivation, and enjoyment in PE classes. Students benefit from enhanced learning outcomes, deeper participation, and innovative experiences, though challenges such as reduced physical activity in specific contexts and implementation barriers persist. Educators are encouraged to adopt these technologies through accessible tools and professional training to maximize their potential. Further research is needed to explore long-term effects, cost-effectiveness, and best practices for incorporating immersive technologies into diverse educational settings. This review underscores the transformative potential of AR and VR to revolutionize K-12 PE, providing actionable insights for designing effective, technology-driven curricula.
