Since the early 2000s, discussions, financing, declarations and resolutions on what might be described as global health have become increasingly dispersed. Alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), the specialized health agency of the United Nations system, there are now other organizations that deal with health issues and, in many cases, have much larger budgets than the WHO. These include the World Bank, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and the Gavi Alliance for Vaccines. There is a proliferation of international players in the health sector today. A certain “politically correct” discourse continues to insist that the WHO is the global coordinating body, but in practice, things seem to work rather differently.
