Introduction
摘要
Chapter 1 introduces the topic and scope of the book with an historical perspective on the progressive displacementdisplacement of the self, from our living more and more in cyberspacecyberspace and through the mediation of digital devices. Most people today spend much of their time–at work, at home, and almost anywhere else–psychologically and socially somewhere other than their physical location. We feel ourselves to be elsewhere because our attentionattention is focused in another place, a place which is brought to us, or which we traveltravel to, using our ever-present digital devices. Often this other place is no place; we are immersed in a placeless world of digital communications, information and disinformation. This psychological and social move away from our physical location for much of our waking day is a profound change in human behaviour and experience. But is it an experientially cataclysmic state of affairs, one that breaks our rather fragile hold on reality, or an evolution of mind opening up exciting new possibilities for human awareness? Perhaps both, as becomes clearer through the course of the book, as we discuss the pros and cons of the displaced selves we have become from a quality of lifequality of life perspective.
