Microplastics are small particles of plastic, having a diameter of less than 5 mm, emerging as a new form of pollution in soil, which poses significant threats to soil health. The primary sources of MPs in agricultural soil include residual plastic fragments from mulching, biosolids (sewage sludge), atmospheric deposition, municipal waste (compost) and plastic coated fertilizers. A soil is considered polluted when the concentration of MPs reaches 0.1% by weight. The significant microplastic concentrations in soil is concerning due to their potential to disrupt ecosystems environment, including altering soil characteristics, disrupting the microbial activities, harming soil biota and negatively impacting the growth of plants. Microplastics create a significant menace to soil ecology and ecosystems due to their potential toxicity, long life span and persistence. In soil, they contribute to degradation of soil structure, reduce the infiltration capacity of rain as well as irrigation water and inturn negatively impact soil water retention. Microplastics in the soil environment greatly impact soil structure, particularly by altering its porosity. Bioturbation causes microplastics to move downward through the soil, and when accumulated in large quantities, these particles can clog soil pores, reducing infiltration capacity. This disruption can interfere with the nutrient cycles of soil, alter the composition of microbial communities and eventually hinder crop growth.
