Inspired by bell hooks’ Sisters of the Yam (2014), we developed a Black Academic Mamas group, called Blackademic Mamas, to support one another socially, emotionally, and professionally. Through the group, we sustain our sisterhood via text chat, brunch dates, and by attending our children’s various social and school-related events. We share resources, strategize, and lean on one another to help process experiences as parents and academic professionals. For this chapter, we draw from endarkened feminism (Dillard, 2019) to discuss how our Blackademic Mamas group, specifically the group texts, provides a model for scholars seeking to create supportive spaces for successfully navigating their personal and professional lives.
