Through the lens of plantation politics, this chapter introduces the term maternal misogynoir to conceptualize the unique forms of oppression Black women face due to their identity and role as mothers. The analysis draws parallels between the reproductive exploitation of Black women during enslavement and their experiences within academia, emphasizing enduring legacies of commodification, systemic control, devaluation, and redistribution. Three central elements of maternal misogynoir within academic institutions are discussed: institutional control over reproductive and personal choices, stereotyping as modern Mammies, and the emotional and psychological toll on Black motherscholars. By naming these experiences through the framework of maternal misogynoir, the chapter seeks to make visible the experiences of Black motherscholars and inspire dialogue, resistance, and collective transformation.
