With my daughter's arrival on August 31, 2015, I embraced motherhood. Yet, it wasn't until 2018 that I fully embraced single motherhood and queerness. Upon graduating in 2017, I hesitated to pursue graduate studies, fearing oppressive environments. Drawing from the wisdom of bell hooks, Patricia Hill-Collins (2022), and Simone Browne, I'll explore my experiences in anti-black educational spaces. Instances like being scrutinized for my pumping schedule or denied the joy of holding my daughter during graduation underscore these challenges. Using autoethnography, I examine my personal experiences as a Black single mother scholar navigating predominantly white institutions (Ellis, 2004; Holman Jones, 2005).
