Your Money Or Your Life: Management of Working Hours
摘要
Once it has an army of drivers at its disposal, Uber still need to ensure they act as required. However, given that Uber’s drivers are self-employed, the platform is not able to pressure them directly. Uber then develops a new form of control, algorithmic management, which combines disciplinary and governance instruments to ensure that Uber drivers behave as expected. Although they are theoretically free to organise their working hours as they wish, they are forced to choose between ‘money or life’. They are thus encouraged to work flexible hours and to accept ‘atypical’ hours. In this way they are encouraged to work flexible hours and accept “atypical” schedules. With experience, some of them employ strategies to optimize their time and regain control. However, it is sometimes in trying to resist the platform’s instructions that they end up serving it even more effectively. This high level of temporal availability then leads to tensions at home and to a deterioration in the health of the drivers.
