A good bad job to Improve One’s Situation
摘要
Beside the drivers who enter the profession to mitigate their demotion, these racialized men become drivers to gain access to a “good bad job”, so as to improve their situation. Uber’s promises are particularly attractive to these groups. Poorly qualified, from working-class backgrounds, confined to unskilled and unstable salaried jobs, this subproletariat see self-employment as the only way to escape their social and racial assignment to unskilled, precarious salaried jobs. The most vulnerable see being Uber driver as a way to rapidly find work and escape unemployment. But, for most of them it is not so much a question of finding a job as finding a better job. While some see it as a means of escaping the constraints they associate with deskilling, others see it as an opportunity to escape in-work poverty.
