Victor Regnault[aut]Regnault, Victor (1810-1878) was the greatest French experimentalist of the mid-19th century. His measurements of the specific heat of many gases allowed later theorists to both test their theories and to be inspired by what he observed. He devised the precision apparatus that allowed these measurements. He also studied the specific heat of solids and revealed that the limiting law presented by Dulong[aut]Dulong, Pierre (1785-1838) and Petit[aut]Petit, Alexis (1791-1820) did not apply to all metals and was badly in error for other elements and compounds. While this chapter does not dwell on the microscopic details of his apparatus, it does reveal just how important Regnault was for the progress of Thermodynamics.
