A true science of Thermodynamics required both a physical and a mathematical foundation. This was provided by Sadi Carnot[aut]Carnot, Sadi (1796-1832) in his classic “Motive Power of Heat.” This book is discussed in complete detail, including a transparent presentation of the mathematics. However, Carnot adopted Lavoisier’s[aut]Lavoisier, Antoine-Laurent (1743-1794) false assertion that “heat is conserved.” Clifford Truesdell[aut]Truesdell, Clifford (1919-2000) constructed a complete and correct theory of Rational Thermodynamics. In this book he critiqued the work of Carnot in complete detail. The essential ideas and important mathematical expressions are presented and discussed. Truesdell praised Carnot for providing a sound basis for Thermodynamics, while also correcting the fatal flaws.
