One of the most important scientific programmes of the 18th century was the work by Lavoisier[aut]Lavoisier, Antoine-Laurent (1743-1794) and Laplace[aut]Laplace, Pierre-Simon Marquis de (1749-1827). Lavoisier published a general “textbook,” Traité elementaire de Chimie (1789). The part on Caloric is discussed. Lavoisier and Laplace published the monumental Mémoire sur la Chaleur (1780). This careful analysis of heat from their perspective dominated discussion until the middle of the 19th century. The original volume is discussed in exhaustive detail. A complete and coherent critique of the Mémoire by Clifford Truesdell[aut]Truesdell, Clifford (1919-2000), The Tragicomical History of Thermodynamics 1822–1854 (1980), is also discussed in detail and employed to conclusively debunk the notion of the conservation of heat. Heat is a process, not a substance.

摘要
