This chapter analyses Carlos Fuentes’ The Hydra Head (1978), a conspiracy thriller novel set in the Mexican oil boom and situated between the exuberant promise of petroleum wealth and petrodollarisation, provides an important generic mediation of oil crisis. It plots a multi-scalar convergence of finance, infrastructure, markets, and media, and a narrative impasse central to the social and political production of petroleum’s market future. As a genre capable of making plot out of financial speculation, the conspiracy thriller is suspicious of how information in market media might have begun to reorganise oil into information (or misinformation), making narratives valuable in a new way. It therefore articulates a narrative logic that corresponds to the macroeconomics of oil as its market abstractions become a hegemonic object and condition of representation.
