Children are constantly learning new things and they can feel inadequate when they compare themselves to other children who can learn things more easily. Children are also frequently exposed to images of seemingly perfect people online, which can make them feel inferior. Most of the children I see struggle with the fear of not being good enough. They tend to focus on their weaknesses and judge themselves harshly. These feelings of insecurity seep into their relationships, including their relationship with me. They can be clingy and can continually seek my approval. In one session, Alice, a long-term client, repeatedly asked for my reassurance when I invited her to paint a picture of something that made her feel happy: “What brush should I use? How big should my painting be? Is this ok?” When I asked her to tell me something about her painting, she responded with: “Is it good?” I started to feel impatient by her neediness. What are my priorities in this situation? My most urgent priority was to take a moment to ground myself. My next priority was to provide a safe and supportive space so that Alice would begin to feel safe to express herself. A long-term goal was to help Alice to rediscover her strengths.
