A great many of my clients are not in the here-and-now. They are caught up in painful episodes from the past or worriedly anticipating future events: “Something bad is going to happen.” “What if?” There is something about the physicality of clayclay that allows children to more clearly see, know, and face their worries and to reconnect with themselves in the current moment. Clay is thick, damp, cold, and easily moulded. Children instinctively want to touch clay and explore it. Manipulating clay helps children to focus and concentrate. It is relaxing, and it helps children to feel grounded as they work.
