Open Access (OA) is presented as a transformative strategy to accelerate the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by democratizing knowledge access and bridging critical information gaps among governments, Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and the private sector. This chapter investigates the nuanced ways these stakeholders leverage OA initiatives to address specific SDG challenges, emphasizing the strategic importance of OA in fostering collaboration and equitable development. The study reveals that governments utilize open data to enhance evidence-based policymaking, particularly in climate action, public health, and economic development. HEIs promote open research and disseminate findings that drive innovation and community engagement. NGOs employ OA tools to implement data-driven projects in underserved sectors and benefit from OA by accessing collaborative research to develop sustainable practices and eco-friendly technologies, contributing to a circular economy. However, the study also identifies significant challenges to widespread OA adoption, including funding constraints that disproportionately affect researchers in developing countries, legal and intellectual property complexities, and the influences of cultural perceptions on OA adoption. To address these challenges, the chapter underscores the necessity of implementing sustainable funding models, developing standardized OA policies and licensing frameworks, and fostering a culture of open knowledge sharing. The findings emphasize OA’s pivotal role in achieving the SDGs by promoting equitable access to information, fostering innovation, and enabling effective collaborations. It concludes by advocating for policy changes, collaborative frameworks, and innovative funding mechanisms to support OA initiatives, ensuring a more inclusive and sustainable future.

摘要
