Global connectivity has become the new reality and thus opening up data has become one of the trans formative ways of handling cross-boundary sustainability issues. This chapter discusses how open data is breaking down silos in innovation, providing equal access to data and knowledge and supporting communities to lead local solutions to environmental and social challenges currently obtaining. Real examples included are as diverse as rural businessmen and women who employ water data to develop cheap irrigation or students who use air quality data to campaign for green space in cities. The chapter explores how open data is pointing the way towards overcoming the knowledge divide, energizing local ingenuity and encouraging people to work together worldwide. It also presents obstacles such as access, use and use, values and norms and provides guidance on how to overcome them to effectively and responsibly use open resources. In the future scenario, open data ecosystems are anticipated for being the main pillars that can lead to sustainable development, and can realize the asymptotic human potential for innovative solutions to advance in gauntlet of environmental issues. As a call to arms for governments, organizations, and individuals to fully support and fund open data, this chapter presents a world where knowledge is free from boundary and works together to build a future that is sustainable and fair.
