In this chapter, we look at some of the most exciting applications of spatial language understanding in NLP. We focus on four areas that are of particular relevance to the role of language understanding in AI. We first examine how spatial information is central to the problem of situated grounding in multimodal dialogue interactions. We then consider the role that spatial language plays in understanding narrative texts. In addition, we review the importance of understanding spatial language in the design and deployment of interfaces for self-driving vehicles. Finally, we look at the integration of vision and language in natural language instructions, particularly as applied to navigation. This selection of topics is in no way exhaustively covering all applications impacted by spatial representations and reasoning. Rather, the goal is to provide a diverse sample of applications associated with spatial language research in NLP.
