Sustainability in Fashion Design Higher Education—Developing a Multi-pronged Approach Based on Experiential Project-Based Learning and Creative Experimentation
摘要
Sustainability has emerged as a critical focus in the fashion industry, urging a paradigm shift in the approach to fashion design education. While new programs and curricula have been established at several universities across the world that focus on sustainable fashion education, the majority are still in the process of evolving and adjusting to this concept which is crucial for developing a new generation of designers who are environmentally and socially conscious. This research paper delves into sustainable approaches in fashion design education, examining the incorporation of sustainable principles into teaching methodologies and student engagement in the existing curriculum, at two universities in Dubai where the programs do not have specific courses on this subject. The study analyzes various educational strategies, including the integration of sustainable materials, ethical production practices such as zero-waste patterns, circular design thinking, and upcycling, integrated into project-based learning that is supplemented with workshops and hands-on activities by experts, followed by the assessment of their effectiveness in cultivating a holistic understanding of sustainability among undergraduate fashion design students. Through a comprehensive exploration of sustainable approaches, this paper aims to provide insights into the transformative potential of sustainable education in shaping the future of the fashion industry.
