The quantum of light, later dubbed the photon and invoked by Einstein in 1905 to explain some processes such as the photoelectric effect, was not observed individually by any experiment until a few years later. Most likely, the first experiment using single photons was performed by G. I. Taylor to see if a single photon was able to produce interference and diffraction patterns. However, Taylor did not mention Einstein.
