The Impact of Charging Fees for Using UPI Applications: A Study of User Behavior
摘要
This research proposes the potential impact of introducing transaction charges on the continued use of Unified Payment Interface (UPI) in India. UPI, an indigenous payment platform regulated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is presently used extensively because of its convenience, low cost, and accessibility. This research is an attempt to look at how the levying of fees for UPI transactions would affect users’ behavior, particularly focusing on high-frequency versus low-frequency users. A survey method was used to collect the required data through a survey of 121 UPI users across Bangalore, collecting demographics, usage frequency, and willingness to continue using UPI under a tariff-based concept. The analysis was undertaken using the Chi-Square test of independence, to infer the relationship between the likelihood of continuing UPI usage with charges and frequency of users. The results represent a statistically significant impact of transaction charges on the likelihood of continued UPI usage, considering that high-frequency users are more likely to pay fees than low-frequency users. These results determine that the Levying of charges could alter user behavior and underline the need for policymakers to recognize frequency-based usage patterns when deciding future tariff structures for UPI. This research offers broader insights into the behavioral shifts that could occur in response to changes in the cost structure of digital payment systems.
