The article examines modern approaches to financing waste management systems in the context of sustainable urban planning, which is a pressing issue in connection with the growth of urbanization and demographic changes. The authors focus on the problems of waste management, emphasizing the importance of integrating environmentally sound practices into the planning process of urban areas. An integrated approach to waste management is considered, which includes waste prevention, recycling and disposal in order to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Special attention is paid to the analysis of legislative and regulatory aspects regulating the waste management sector in Ukraine. The study contains an analysis of the current state of waste management in Kyiv, in particular, it examines the diagram of the dynamics of waste generation and disposal for the period from 1995 to 2023. The authors note significant variability in waste volumes, which indicates the complexity of their management and the need for changes in approaches to their processing. It is emphasized that the significant gap between generated and disposed waste indicates shortcomings in the existing waste management system. Attention is drawn to the importance of international grants, government programs and public–private partnership mechanisms for financing initiatives in the field of waste reduction and the introduction of environmental technologies. In addition, the study focuses on the development of a “green” economy through investments in modern waste management infrastructure, which allows creating new jobs and reducing the negative impact on the environment. Integrating waste management into urban planning is an important step towards sustainable urban development, and to achieve sustainable development goals, it is necessary to implement innovative technologies and strategies to reduce waste generation and increase its utilization. The conclusions of the article emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach to waste management, which includes environmental, economic and social aspects, in order to create environmentally safe living conditions in cities.
