Digital Nomadism in Shaping Sustainable Hospitality Practices
摘要
This study examined the relationship between sustainable hospitality and the attributes and obstacles encountered by digital nomads. Employing a mixed methods design by combining systematic review of relevant literature with data coming from focus group discussions, the study adopts a systematic review following the PRISMA framework to ensure thorough selection and analysis of sources. Subsequently, NVivo software analyzes qualitative data collected from the focus groups to discover key major themes and patterns. Findings indicated that digital nomads place very high importance on sustainability. Eco-friendly practices and accommodations were prioritized. Flexibility in accommodation types, specifically co-living types, as well as reliable digital infrastructure were essential. Affordability and unsustainably few options came up as key obstacles. Gaps were revealed in the literature mainly classified as lack of research about cultural barriers and long-term trends, particularly those that relate to digital nomad behavior. The findings hold effective improvements to offer hospitality providers, from investing in and adopting as a practice of sustainability to offering flexible cohabitation models with lower fees and cultural-community engagement. It also informs academic discourse on sustainable hospitality and digital nomadism. It fills theoretical gaps and is a step towards future studies. The unique needs of a digital nomad have been found to be better met by sustainable practices, improving their experience while fulfilling global sustainability goals.
