You Shouldn’t Be Looking: Gothic Storytelling and Alternate Reality Games
摘要
In 2020 a TikTok account known as @youshouldntbelooking generated a large following owing to ambiguous content presented as actual footage of a killer hunting, murdering and disposing of victims. Users observed images of stalking through dark lanes, dragging suitcases through overgrown fields and spying on homes through wire fences. Uploads included disturbing hashtags such as #dontlookatme, #whydidyouleave and #almostdone. A significant source of fascination with @youshouldntbelooking is the uncertainty surrounding its veracity or alternate reality game (ARG) status. A recurrent question in online forums asks, is this a murderer hiding in plain sight or murder as interactive performance art? ARGs have flourished in the digital era as interactive storytelling tools, building narratives across multiple media outputs. Here, this content is interacted with as transmedia performance art operating within the structural and stylistic tropes of the classic Gothic novel, with users positioned as Gothic heroine, tenaciously determined to solve the mystery whilst becoming enrapt in it herself. In doing so, I hope to establish a foundational methodology for the analysis of trans media storytelling practices such as ARGs within popular genre frameworks. This approach contributes to increasing the accessibility and critical consistencies in twenty-first-century transmedia, interactive storytelling.
