This chapter explores the phenomenon of websleuthing, a form of amateur online detective work that leverages the participatory culture of the digital age to investigate crimes and mysteries. Examining high-profile cases such as Gabby Petito’s disappearance, the #MeToo movement, and the doxing of participants in politically charged events, it evaluates websleuthing's ethical implications, risks, and potential benefits. While websleuths have demonstrated their ability to uncover evidence, assist law enforcement, and provide alternative narratives for marginalised communities, their practices also raise significant concerns. Issues of misinformation, interference with investigations, and sensationalism blur the lines between justice and entertainment, challenging traditional legal and journalistic standards. This chapter highlights the need for balanced approaches to websleuthing that safeguard its constructive potential while addressing its dangers.
