This chapter explores online responses to true crime podcasting on the subreddit r/KristinSmart, focusing on community discourse regulation and investigative approaches in the context of victim-centred advocacy. The podcast Your Own Backyard (2019), hosted by Chris Lambert, played a crucial role in reviving public interest in the 1996 disappearance of Kristin Smart and contributed to the conviction of Paul Flores in 2022. By combining analysis of the podcast's narrative strategies and the subreddit’s community moderation practices, this chapter investigates how affective engagement and collaborative inquiry foster complex community discourses on justice and healing. Drawing on Eve Sedgwick's theories of paranoid and reparative reading to analyse audience responses, it aims to critically evaluate how true crime influences the formation of systemic critique and gender-based advocacy. As the Your Own Backyard community connects true crime narrative with reflections on everyday gendered violence, this chapter argues that the podcast's intimate storytelling and community knowledge production create affective bonds which may validate dissenting epistemologies. Overall, this research aims to contribute to understanding the ethical dynamics of true crime communities, arguing for their potential to encourage critical reflection on justice while acknowledging potential pitfalls and the complexities of parasocial relationships.
