Members of online crime-solving communities work together to construct proposed solution narratives that seek to fill in the gaps inherent in unsolved crimes. Understanding these narratives is valuable not only because they provide insight into vernacular perceptions of crime but because they have impacted the analog world, both helping and hindering investigations. These narratives are built communally, with participants drawing on previous posts until consensus is reached. While these narratives are grounded in the facts of the case, they sometimes stretch the bounds of plausibility. These narratives bear a strong resemblance to legend through their connections to social concerns, use of validating formulas, recurrent motifs, and engagement with matters of belief. In many cases, these narratives engage in what folklorists call “quasi-ostension,” interpretation of events through the lens of legends one has previously encountered.
