African American women faculty at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs), persist and succeed at these institutions due to their resilience. As an African American woman who is Professor at a PWI there are a number of experiences and people that have helped shape me into the scholar, researcher, and person that I am today. Many of the experiences are unique to the culture and climate of PWIs. Moreover, the experiences at a PWI in the South add an additional layer that are also unique. I have been at my current institution for over two decades having started as a tenure track Assistant Professor. I tell everyone 20+ years ago I would have never believed that we would still be at the same institution. However, the community (both within and outside of the institution) are the reasons we were able to find a place to call home. This chapter will highlight the experiences that helped me grow as a scholar, as well as the strategies that I used to navigate academe. Hopefully, the experiences highlighted in this chapter will assist others in their journey and hopefully help them become successful, tenured and promoted scholars at institutions of higher education.
