This chapter shares how I was able to find success and a home in teaching Science/STEM education. Guided by my parents’ wisdom and these 3 C’s: Connection, Communication, & Community, I was able to enter a career dedicated to empowering others. By leveraging my networking and mentoring abilities, I help youth to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). My commitment to science education led to my development of an outreach program for youth and numerous community engagement initiatives preparing the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. In this chapter, I share my beginnings in this career and my learned experiences as I navigated in science classrooms and other academic spaces where I was the only African American student or educator of color. Through personal narratives, I reveal the guidance that shaped my future as a science/STEM educator. This chapter contributes to literature on African American women’s academic journeys, highlighting how the three C’s serve as powerful tools for persistence and success amid the unique challenges encountered throughout one’s academic and professional journey in education.
