As community and citizen science (CCS) becomes increasingly popular for science and environmental education, educators are grappling with how best to design programs that involve authentic partnerships between scientists, teachers, students, and community-based organizations to support meaningful science and learning outcomes. In this chapter, we report on the Our Forests program, a collaborative project between university researchers, a community-based watershed organization, local educators, and forestry professionals, in Northern California, USA. The Our Forests program curriculum was designed for and implemented with, 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students who collected and analyzed data using forest ecology protocols designed collaboratively with local forest managers. Our Forests was explicitly designed for mutual benefit across students, teachers, and community partners to inform forest management practices in the face of recurring catastrophic wildfires. We share the program structure and 3 Key Design Features of this locally relevant environmental CCS program, where students engage in (1) place-based data collection, (2) analysis and meaning-making with data, and (3) sharing their findings with community partners.
