Flebocollect: School Citizen Science to Study Leishmaniosis Disease and the Impact of Ecosystem Disruption on Global Health

Citizen science has recently received special attention from both the scientific and education communities. This approach promotes the democratization of science by involving community members in scientific research projects. By engaging people in Citizen Science, researchers gain invaluable data, and the general population improves its perceptions of science and its role in society. Flebocollect is a citizen science project involving not only high school students but also general public and specialized entomologists. The project begins with a didactic proposal in which students try to solve real life problems by playing the board game “Outbreak”, designed to understand the consequences of anthropogenic alteration of the environment such as the emergence of diseases like leishmaniosis. In the next activity, students place themselves in the shoes of entomologists specialized in the study of phlebotomine sand flies, insect vectors of leishmaniosis. Using DIY (do it yourself) light traps manufactured by the students from used materials, they send data to researchers through a web application including captured sand fly numbers and corresponding GPS coordinates. Besides monitoring the spatial and temporal dynamics of sand flies in a study area, our project raised awareness about the importance of contributing to scientists and thus prevent new disease outbreaks.
