Persons with disabilities are still facing widespread inequalities in the areas of education and work. AI-supported technologies show great potential in supporting persons with disabilities in vocational education and training, vocational rehabilitation, and the workplace. This paper examines the current state of developments in AI-supported assistance systems, using the example of persons with hearing impairments and visual impairments. Findings on their support needs are presented and compared to existing functions of AI assistance that were either designed to meet those specific needs or display great potential to support them in educational and workplace settings. The goal is to examine research and development gaps regarding AI assistance for persons with different kinds of disabilities. We provide first insights indicating which of their needs are currently underrepresented or unmet.
