Sigmoid dyskinesia is a term that describes painful or disordered peristalsis in the sigmoid colon. The word derives from two Greek stems: “dys” meaning bad or disordered (sometimes “painful”) and “kinein” meaning “to move.” Clinically it refers to a variant of irritable bowel syndrome, but the important difference is that treatment of sigmoid dyskinesia is surgical.
