Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a constellation of symptoms that occurs in patients who have undergone resection of the sigmoid colon and most of the rectum, with a low colorectal or colo-anal anastomosis. It is very common immediately after this sort of surgery, with up to 90% of patients affected. In this chapter the pathophysiology of the syndrome is discussed and ways to mitigate its severity are suggested.
