Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly spreading soft tissue infection that causes tissue necrosis. The bacterial infection spreads along tissue planes and quickly produces an overwhelming sepsis that is fatal. Risk factors are diabetes, steroid therapy, immune suppression, and other co-morbidities, while renal failure, obesity, and increasing age join diabetes as risk factors for death. Mortality is 25–35% because of the rapidity of the spread of infection and the subtlety of the presentation. This chapter discusses ways of controlling this frightening complication.
