The Turnbull–Cutait procedure is a proctectomy with a staged colo-anal anastomosis described independently and synchronously in the 1960s by two famous colorectal surgeons: Rupert Beach Turnbull in Cleveland, Ohio, and Daher Cutait in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Daher Cutait (1913–2001) was a Brazilian surgeon who had part of his early training here at Columbia University Medical Center. He was a colorectal surgeon at the University of São Paulo-Hospital das Clinicas, where he was appointed head of Colo-Proctology in 1947. He built the premier colorectal unit in all of Latin America and remained there until his retirement in 1983. His son, Raoul, is also a prominent colorectal surgeon who was actively involved in hereditary colorectal cancer management.
