Colorectal cancer is a genetic disease. Cancer cells have accumulated several genetic abnormalities that destroy the function of normal growth-controlling pathways. This allows the affected cells to reproduce wildly and invade at will. It also destroys cell–cell binding, so affected cells fall away from the growing tumor and are found in the blood and the stool. Sometimes it’s not even cells but genetic fragments that are shed. This shedding creates the opportunity for cancer DNA to be found in the stool.
