How Do You Diagnose and Manage a Patient Complaining of an Itchy Bottom?

One of the more common symptoms that colorectal surgeons treat is that of an itchy bottom. The presentation of the itchiness varies; for some patients, it’s their main complaint, while others just respond “yes” to a question based on examination of the bottom in question. Sometimes the itchiness turns to pain as scratching produces ulcerations (Fig. 24.1), and sometimes the ulcerations bleed, but the basic cause for the painful bleeding is the itch.
