A thorough and clinically helpful examination of the abdomen is an important skill for abdominal surgeons to learn and to practice. It does not occur in isolation, but after a history that establishes a differential diagnosis. If there are no symptoms, and the examination is performed as a screen, past history still informs the examination. For example, if there is a past history of abdominal surgery, there is a scar to examine, and if there is no past history and no symptoms, there are still hernias to exclude and masses to rule out.
