Beyond the Classroom: Innovative Tech-Driven Learning Environments for Future South African Built Environment Professionals

The construction industry is increasingly recognizing the need for innovative and sustainable learning environments to prepare future professionals for the challenges of a rapidly evolving built environment. This study analyses the integration of technological advances such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), and digital learning platforms into construction education can foster sustainable learning experiences for students in the built environment. Using a scoping review methodology, the research identifies key approaches and trends in the adoption of these technologies to create adaptable and resilient educational environments. Additionally, a systematic search covering 2015 to 2025 across databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar resulted in a total of 763 papers, of which 53 were pertinent. These relevant papers were subsequently synthesised systematically through thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and insights. The findings emphasise that immersive technologies such as AR and VR not only improve student engagement but also provide hands-on, experiential learning that closely bridges the gap between theoretical insights and practical skills by modelling real-world situations. Digital platforms further support sustainable learning by allowing flexible, remote access to resources, reducing the environmental impact of physical materials. The study concludes that technology-enhanced learning environments can significantly contribute to the sustainability of construction education by promoting resource efficiency and aligning with the industry’s digital transformation. These findings emphasize the importance of embedding digital tools into educational frameworks to equip students with the skills needed for sustainable practice in the construction industry.
