This chapter explores empirical evidence from a variety of basic income and related experiments. It measures the degree to which they approximate the principles of basic income to assess the degree to which they may be classed as basic income experiments. Each section examines empirical findings in relation to labour market effects, and where possible job search behaviours across experiments. Lessons for basic income policy are drawn whilst acknowledging the constraints of experimental evidence. The approach taken lays the groundwork for the empirical analysis of existing welfare systems that follows in subsequent chapters.
